An Introduction to Tort

This lesson is aimed at reminding you of the main rules on duty, breach and causation that you should have studied at AS-level. Only key cases are dealt with in detail in the text. Other cases which may be useful to illustrate particular issues are included as regards their principles.  You can look up the full facts elsewhere if you wish. Also the ‘Case study’ tasks include further illustrations of how some of these principles are applied in other cases. The ‘Matching’ tasks should remind you of the principles you need to know in order to apply the law correctly. Other tasks and worksheets will reinforce the points made or extend your knowledge for the advanced level. There is no evaluation needed for tort so you don’t have to worry about problems in the law, just how to apply it.

When you have worked through the text and the tasks you should be able to:

  • Explain the principles behind the law on duty, breach and causation

  • Explain how the law applies in different situations

  • Support what you say by reference to appropriate cases

How this is organised

The activities are divided into short texts with some information and tasks to complete and the occasional exercise to test you as we go along. At the end of the lesson, there will be a test to see how much you can remember.
There are 3 stages following this page but you don't have to do them at the same time. You can stop, make a note of where you are and come back when you've had a break. Up to you.

Navigation

You can navigate to any page using the menu at the top of each page but you are strongly urged to go through the lesson logically, in the order it was designed.
You can do this lesson alone or with colleagues with whom you can discuss your reactions to the tasks and exercises. Whichever way you prefer, please have a pen and paper handy so that you can write not just think about your responses.

From time to time, you will get a sentence on screen in this colour.  When that happens, respond to the task before moving down the page or on to the next Stage.
